Dear Lloyd,
Treasury Chambers,
Great George Street,
S.W.1.
11th August, 1947.
(18) You wrote to me on the 12th April about the

IA
future of Hong Kong University and there has been
subsequent correspondence between you and Crombie in
(28) letters of the 9th May and the 26th June. (31)
On the whole and with some reservations arising
(28) from the first head of Crombie's letter of 9th May
viz. the establishment of priorities among demands
on us from the Far East, we felt sympathetic towards
this proposal. But as I see it the financial
position has been changed by developments over the
last few months, culminating in the
situation
discussed in the House last week, and it seems clear
that this is the sort of scheme which must go into
abeyance in present circumstances.
I have not consulted the Chancellor, as I imagine
that your Minister will readily accept this view,
but
Sir Thomas Lloyd, K.C.M.G.,
Colonial Office.
